NSE’s GSM, ASM, and ESM are special monitoring frameworks used by exchanges and SEBI to curb excessive speculation, alert investors, and protect market integrity.

ASM

Additional Surveillance Measure

Watches trading behaviour — price-volume variation and high volatility. Triggered by unusual volume spikes or client concentration, and brings higher margin requirements and narrowed price bands.

GSM

Graded Surveillance Measure

Watches a stock's fundamentals against its price rise. Triggered by weak financials, low net worth, or an abnormal P/E, and moves the stock to Trade-for-Trade (T2T) with an Additional Surveillance Deposit (ASD) required.

ESM

Enhanced Surveillance Measure

Focused on micro-cap and small-cap companies prone to manipulation. Triggered by high volatility in lower-market-cap names, and brings strict T2T settlement with limited weekly trading sessions.

What happens when a stock is placed under ASM/GSM/ESM?

  • Price bands are reduced or tightened.
  • Margin requirements rise, or an Additional Surveillance Deposit (ASD) is required.
  • The stock moves to Trade-for-Trade (T2T) settlement — no intraday trading, delivery-only.
  • Trading frequency can be reduced in the more severe stages — e.g. weekly instead of daily sessions under ESM.
  • Corporate actions (bonus issues, rights issues) can be restricted or face additional scrutiny while a stock is under these frameworks.
